A new construction equipment telematics standard will increase end-user customer satisfaction by making it easier to control fleet operating costs.
Members of an industry working group say OEMs and equipment fleet managers should be able to start integrating the new standard into their business systems by the end of April with a low risk of major changes.
“We are on track to meet our April target date to have a draft that is fairly close to the final standard,” said Nick Bollweg, engineering manager, WorkSight/ForestSight at Deere & Company. “It will be up to each OEM and end user to determine when they want to begin coding to the standard, but the risk of major changes before final approval should be low at that point.”
The telematics working group is currently wrapping up its efforts on the standard, which will soon be submitted for acceptance by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
The working group met recently in Miami, Florida, to review the latest draft of the standard. The meeting was attended by delegates from Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
A revised version of the draft will be sent to members of the working group in early April. Working group members are scheduled to complete their review and submit any new comments by May 1.

The ISO telematics standard is based on the Draft Telematics API Standard announced last year by AEM and the Association of Equipment Management Professionals (AEMP).
While access to the AEM/AEMP Draft Telematics API Standard is free, industry professionals must sign up directly via the AEM or AEMP websites to be sent the draft standard and to receive any future updates or additional documentation.
The associations caution that while they are making the draft standard available now to help companies become familiar with its contents for business planning purposes, the document is still a work in progress. Final language is dependent upon completion of the ISO acceptance process.
