MENARD GROUP USA WORKS WITH SEVERINO FOR NEW HAMPSHIRE DOT’s SPAULDING TURNPIKE WIDENING PROJECT
PITTSBURGH – November 29, 2016 – Pittsburgh-based ground improvement specialist Menard Group USA is working with general contractor Severino for the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) to provide support for the Spaulding Turnpike widening project in Dover.
Menard Group USA will install over 300 controlled modulus column (CMC) rigid inclusions at depths of up to 35 feet to address ground settlement in the abutments on either side of the Turnpike. Traditionally, embankments would be supported by CMC rigid inclusions, but abutments would be supported by piles. What makes this project unique is the installation of CMC rigid inclusions to support both the embankment and abutment.
Menard Group USA will also install over 56,000 wick drains, or more than 3 million linear feet, at depths of up to 98 feet to address problematic clay deposits on the site.

Our CMC rigid inclusion solution provides settlement control while improving the overall stability of the true abutment to allow for faster construction schedules and reduced costs. The utilization of wick drains across the remainder of the project offers a cost-effective solution for inducing pre-construction settlement of the final roadway alignments,” said Brandon Buschmeier, Menard Group USA Engineering Manager.
