It’s not a Bingo number or an attempt to sink a Battleship. It’s not my dry-cleaning claim ticket or a parking spot at the mall. It is Coastal Highway Route E39 on the west coast of Norway. According to Volvo CE, to drive the length of the current coastal route (from Trondheim in the north to Kristiansand in the south) takes about 21 hours. When the E39 leaves Norway, it continues on to Denmark, so it’s an important European entry point.

At a cost of $39 billion, this is Norway’s biggest and most expensive infrastructure project, ever. The goal is to build and rebuild bridges, tunnels, and stretches of highway to cut that 21 hours down to 10 hours. The most impressive part of the project is the Rogfast Tunnel. Once it’s completed in 2026, it should be the longest and deepest subsea tunnel in the world.

It’s an impressive undertaking by a country looking ahead to its future.
